Does Sign Language Help a Child Learn to Read?

Certified American Sign Language (ASL) teachers have been touting the benefits of teaching hearing children sign language at an early age to help develop reading skills. Now, many parents are beginning to teach their children (as young as preschoolers even) basic words and expressions as a way to have them participate in story time readings. Should ASL be taught to all young children regardless of hearing disabilities? Laura Berg, a certified ASL teacher and founder of My Smart Hands offers informational online videos for parents and hearing toddlers learning sign language.
