Studies Reveal the Gaining Momentum of Online Degrees

According to a U.S. News report, 1 in 4 college students are participating in some form of online education.  The study indicates that the economy has played a large factor in the increased student enrollment in online degree programs, up 17% since 2007.  Other factors may include the H1N1 outbreak.

Let’s focus on the economy issue as it appears to hold more merit.  In a time period filled with significant unemployment statistics and bail out plans, the market for a decent job is competitive and down-right frustrating.  More people are competing for less jobs and the ability to stand out amongst other applicants has become an even greater challenge.  What better way to get ahead than by enrolling in one of the many online colleges which are increasing in popularity?   Often considered more affordable, distance education is offering individuals a viable solution to make a splash in the shallow job pool.

U.S. News also points out that although online colleges are on the rise, the acceptance by traditional faculty members is not increasing at the same rate.  This could be true for a number of reasons.  Some professors are simply old school – they believe academia belongs in a traditional classroom setting.  Along similar lines, other educational instructors may feel that the value of learning in the classroom cannot be replicated over the Internet; even at the top online schools available.

Whatever the reason may be, academic faculties cannot ignore statistics and must realize that if they don’t join the online education movement, the institution they represent may see a sharp decline in enrollment.  While the teachers still have their doubt, the research indicates that the deans and those responsible for the courses offered have accepted the trend:  over 90 percent of online education growth is a result of traditional schools enhancing their course offerings with some form of accredited online degrees.

I guess the old saying is true: If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.
